In May 2000, the Department of
Health characterized the
problem of asthma in the U.S. as an epidemic. An estimated
17.7 million Americans are afflicted; among them
are over
half a million New Yorkers (6% of the population), some
35,000 of whom are hospitalized each year. Extensive
research also reveals that a disproportionate number
of
these asthmatics come from low-income, predominantly
minority neighborhoods. Our group addresses the
growing
concern over the fact that our city has one of the worst
asthma rates in the country. Moreover, we offer an analysis
as to why there exist such broad discrepancies in asthma's
effects on different New York City communities.
