Environmental Hazards

Scientific studies point to an association between concentrations in air of carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and volatile organic carbons (VOCs) -- all released with car exhaust -- and the frequency of hospital admissions due to heart disease and asthma.

In Canarsie and Flatlands (11234, 11236), heart disease admission rates are 10% higher than the statistic in New York City as a whole, and asthma admission rates are 30% lower.

Our survey reflects Canarsie/Flatlands residents' levels of awareness about the effects of environmental agents on heart disease and asthma.

We evaluated the extent to which the people's perceptions correlate with the reality of their environment's chemical characteristics by comparing the survey results with the amounts of chemical emissions.
