The CUNY Honors College At Brooklyn
College Presents:
Environmental
Factors and Public Perception In Brooklyn: Flatbush-East Flatbush
Issues:
Based on a preliminary survey taken in the Flatbush-East Flatbush
neighborhood, it was concluded that approximately 83% of the people
surveyed listed cancer as their number one health concern. The next
survey that was taken focused on the people’s perception of what
factors they believed were most responsible for the number of cancer
cases that were reported in the 11203, 11210, 11225 and 11226 zip
codes.
Methodology:
Once all the survey data was collected and quantified, cancer
statistics from the Infoshare database, information on economic
conditions from the US Census, and data on toxic emissions from the EPA
were gathered. Then, using the ArcGIS Esri databases and mapping
applications, as well as data from the surveys, we compared the
perceptions of the causes of cancer to the actual occurrence of these
phenomenon.
Conclusions:
While it is difficult to pinpoint and highlight the true cause for
cancer, it is interesting to note what the residents of 11203, 11210,
11225 and 11226 believe is responsible. Observing the hypothetical with
the actual sheds light upon the extent to which residents are informed
about their community.
