Our Survey
In order to understand the environmental concerns of the residents in Brooklyn Heights, Downtown Brooklyn, and Park Slope, we created a list of survey questions. Then we went to our assigned neighborhoods and had approximately ten surveys filled out in each of the five zip codes (11201, 11205, 11215, 11217, 11231). After analyzing our results, we learned that air pollution—as a result of local construction—was one of the greatest environmental health concerns. In addition, many residents suffered from asthma as a result of such environmental pollutions. Other health related concerns voiced through the surveys were lung cancer, lead exposure, and tuberculosis:

The results of this survey were alarming. The overall knowledge
of those we interviewed of the serious problems that can and do affect their
neighborhoods was lacking and this indicated multiple things: 1) There must
not be information circulating through a medium that all people access daily
(i.e. flyers in mail, articles toward the front of newspapers, local television
commercials, etc.); 2) Those whom we surveyed were not actively researching
environmental and health issues that could impact their lives; 3) Agencies,
both governmental and non-governmental, were not doing effective grassroots
information dissemination to residents of Brooklyn.
