Solid Waste Disposal Abstract
A comparative study was conducted
by a group of four college students to determine the effect of generated
waste on the environment. Two different landfills, one in California
and another in NY, were researched with a focus on their waste production
and the regulations enforced on their methods of disposal. The study
shows that differences in the two societies affect the types of solid wastes
that they produce and therefore directly influence the specific toxic constituents
that will be expelled into the environment. In order to isolate these
constituents from the environment, landfills are produced, however, the emission
can never be fully controlled. This leads to the root of our research
in which we show the statistics of common chemicals emitted and their
emission concentrations for each landfills. It is evident, after analysis
of our data, that there is a direct relationship between the waste disposed,
the garbage regulations of the landfill, and the constituents that escape
into the environment.
